Microsoft has introduced an option for Teams users to report suspicious individual calls as part of the company’s efforts to combat the growing number of voice scams against businesses.
With this option, employees can report calls that they suspect may be fraudulent to internal security teams using the “Report a Call” feature in their Teams call history.
This feature is an improvement to the call reporting ecosystem. Phishing via voice calls is a growing concern as Teams is increasingly used for business communications.
Attackers often rely on voice-based phishing scams to obtain credentials, banking information, and other sensitive data. Reports to business security teams about fraudulent calls targeting Teams users are time sensitive.
Before this feature, there was a lack of reporting mechanisms for Teams users, resulting in limited controls and a lack of response to the attacks.
Reporting a call is as simple as clicking on three dots menu in a call entry, and this option is now available on Teams for Windows, Mac and web.
Users can choose to report calls that they think are scams, phishing, suspicious, or spam calls from external users.
When a report is submitted, some details about the call are shared, such as time and length of the call, and whether the caller ID is available. No audio of the call is submitted.
For organizations using Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 or Plan 2, or Microsoft Defender XDR, reported calls go directly into Microsoft Defender.
Administrators can also see submissions in the Teams Admin Center under Protection reports. This balance user privacy and improves threat detection.
This feature is enabled by default, but Admins can turn this off in the Calling settings. Microsoft advises to keep Defender integrations on and train users on call reporting to strengthen the organization’s defences against voice attacks.
Starting mid-March 2026, tenants on targeted release will have this feature, and mid to late April 2026 is when the feature will be globally available. As the deployment progresses, there may be updates.
